KNOWLEDGE EXPLOSION Regional middle schoolers gather for event BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - A day of competi tive learning. The Northeastern Region One Middle School Competi tion for Scholars took place on Monday, March 6 at Heri tage House Restaurant. 72 middle school students and their coaches gathered for the event titled “Day of Knowledge Explosion.” The schools participat ing in the competition in cluded E.B. Aycock Middle School in Greenville, Bertie Middle School in Windsor, Columbia Middle School in Columbia, Currituck Middle School in Currituck, Gates Middle School in Gatesville and Moyock Middle School in Moyock. Each school sent four teams with three members on each team. The Day of Knowledge Ex plosion Competition Director Dr. Tim Mizelle told the stu dents, “This is a day to spot light your knowledge.” “Everyone is a winner,” add ed Mizelle. The 72 scholars did not know the questions in ad- See EXPLOSION, A3 Chamber celebrates Black History Month [ 1 Bertie County Sheriff John Holley speaks at the annual Black History Banquet Feb. 21. WINDSOR - The Windsor/Bertie Chamber of Commerce presented the ninth annual Black History Banquet at Cashie Heritage Con vention Center on Feb. 21. The theme this year was “A rec ognition of Municipal & County Law Enforcement.” Over 300 at tendees enjoyed a night of music and good food. The featured honoree was Ber tie County Sheriff John Holley. He received the lifetime achievement award for his more than 30 years of service and for being the first African American Sheriff of Bertie County. Sheriff Holley wowed the audience with his singing and then spoke to the crowd about some of the issues that his department is facing. The sheriff described spe cifically the difficulty of retention of officers because of higher pay ing jobs elsewhere in the area. Also recognized was Johnnie T. Speller, Jr. who was the first Afri- See PROGRAM, A3 B&E suspect wanted Wiggins has warrants in 2 counties BYTHADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance LEWISTON WOODVILLE - The Bertie County Sher iff’s Office is seeking a suspect in a robbery of a church. Bertie County Sheriff John Holley said inves tigation into a breaking and entering at Weeping Mary Baptist Church has led to developing a suspect in the case. Det. Sgt. Harris Wil liams responded to the reported breaking and entering at 208 Weeping Mary Rd. in Lewiston Woodville on Feb. 22. “Several items were taken, including an or ange igloo cooler, a small refrigerator, two speakers, two floor mics and a PA system,” Sheriff Holley said. Other items taken included a guitar, EV board, EV speakers and music stands. Det. Sgt. Williams in vestigated the incident and has drawn up war rants for Deandre Wig gins for the crime. Wig gins reportedly also has warrants on file for fel ony possession of sto len property and felony obtaining property by false pretense.
